Take The Winter B-icicle Challenge!
As winter settles in across all Northern Hemisphere nations, and the cold wind blows, it’s tempting to put your bike away for hibernation. But as of December 1, we’re asking you to keep on pedalling through all three winter months.
Why are we doing it?
- To see if we can put our money where our mouth is in regards to living a greener life, and not just when weather permits
- A good time to reflect about those people without homes during winter
- We love riding our bikes and don’t want to go three months without it
- We hate traffic jams!
Rules. We will ride to work or school everyday unless:
- The road is so icy we’ll most probably break our necks (read here for alternatives)
- We have a meeting or activity that is more than an hour bike ride away
- We’re so sick with the flu we can’t even be bothered to watch The Wire
What we want from you.
Join us! If you’re about to head into the depths of winter.

Love your awesome challenge. I’m committed! Although the mild winter this year in Virginia Beach is making it somewhat less of a challenge than it would normally be. It’s still tough to get out in some days though. Thank you!
interesting, to call it a challenge to ride the bike.. my usual challenge in winter is that i dont wear enough clothes for regular activities when i meet friends, i dont get cold when i ride my bike. =)
Great project you guys have started here! On occasion of the Danish EU Presidency 2012 the embassy in Beijing is launching a campaign using biking to promote green transportation and solutions. We are already working together with some local NGOs and BJ government on some activities but maybe you have some good input too?
Welcome!
I have been biking all year around for some twenty years, at least. With proper clothing and studded tyres it really is no big deal. When temperature drops to below -20 degrees centigrade the speed makes it too cold, though. So those days I walk instead. Or take the bus.
I live in Sundsvall in the middle of Sweden in a climate with cold and snowy winters that will last from november to april. The upside is perfect conditions for cross-country skiing. Especially at the end of the winter, when the snow has become hard and crusty and you can skate on your skis everywhere and are not confined to using the prepared tracks. There is a wonderful time to come!
